Unhappy Installing Samsung ML-1710 on Linux

I've bought a Samsung ML-1710 printer and despite it saying "Linux support" on the box, I cannot get it to work at all. I've installed the drivers on the CD-ROM that came with the printer again, without any success and am now lost as to what to do next. It's able to print fine in Windows.

Does anyone else have this printer and have you managed to install it successfully?

I can print to a ML-1710 with Redhat 9.0.

1. You can get an updated SAMSUNG print package from samsung.com. Just enter 1710 in the search and download the linux driver package that was released in October.

OR

2. Use KDE control center to setup the ML-1710 using CUPS and the samsung ML1210(yes 1210) driver. Make sure the samsung printer package is UNINSTALLED.

I have had printing success with both methods.

Wink samsung ML-1710 driver

The use of Samsung's driver software for the ML-1710 is frustrating, but doable. First you need to download the latest driver from Samsung. The one on the disk is broken. It is trivial to find on their site, so I'll spare you the details.

After untarring the tarball you just su to root and run

# ./setup.sh

It will create a directory /usr/local/linuxprinter with the printer stuff in it. Then I ran the command

# linux-configure

and it came up with a supposed printer set up to print. It still did not work. I noticed that the usb setup seemed incomplete, so I removed the printer instance in Samsungs graphic dialog box thingy and added a new printer instance under linux printers, using the button on their dialog thingy. The instance created works when I try to print. I also got to set things like paper thickness and some toner stuff.
