Installing Red Hat 9.0 on SATA drives
 

I recently purchased an Abit IC7-G Mobo with the Sil 3124 SATA controller. I'm trying to perform a clean install of Red Hat 9.0 but keep encountering issues discovering the SATA drives. How can I create an newer installation CD with the updated kernel that supports the Sil3124? Does the kernel release 2.4.20-20.9 support SATA with the Sil3124 controller?

Any guidance on how to complete the install is welcome!

That's quite an old kernel. I'd be surprised if it worked with SATA. Probably the easiest thing is to set the BIOS to use compatibility mode for your drive(s). Then things should just look like plain old ATA.

Is that really an old kernel? I looked at the Red Hat site and didn't notice anything too much newer besides the beta for 9.0. As for my bios settings, i'm not really sure how to set that up and still have my system boot with XP.

I see your problem. XP should handle the drives in compatibility mode also, but I don't know how it would react to you changing that seeting after installation. I suppose reinstalling XP might work -- depends how desperate you are.

I don't follow these things too closely, but I thought SATA support started to appear in 2.4.21. I have a working SATA drive and got the impression it depended on some 2.4.21 kernel patches.

Sorry, I don't know much about RedHat so I can't advise the best way to get a newer kernel.

I'm really interested in this post because like you I too have the abit IC7-G. I have 2 SATA drives that are striped in a raid 0 setup...
Also when trying to install linux on a drive connected via IDE I'm getting problems with my graphic card. seems 9.-0 dosen't recognize my card : Sappire 9800PRO.

Hello Everyone,

I broke down and called Red Hat today to see if they could help with this issue. Fact of the matter is they don't support SATA with the current release. They had me try a couple of things. from the installation screen type: linux ide=reverse nousb text. Unfortunately the ide=reverse command didn't work. The only solution at this time is to wait for a release of Red Hat which supports SATA using the SiI3112 conrtoller.
