Installing RAID0 with Fedora6

Hi,
Im trying to set up two raptors (identical) with RAID-0 using Silicon Image.

The drives arent being detected by linux. I have the linux drivers on USB but unsure on where to install them. There is no option available...

The drives are being detected on computer start up..and were working with windows...

Havent tried a diff distro as can get my hands on one.

Motherboard is a A8N-Sli Deluxe.

If you need anymore info just ask!

Thanks for you help!

Fedora 6? Aren't we up to Fedora 12 at this point?

Motherboard RAID-0 is usually run using dmraid; you might want to look up "fake raid" as well as "dmraid", but it'd be easier to just use something more current. There are a number of threads dealing with RAID-0 installation on this forum as well as found by google. Sorry if that isn't helpful...

im not sure what version, but 6 is all I have. Have you ever installed RAID with linux? Do you know if all RAID drivers are on the installation cd, or do you have to install them before (or possibly after) installation?

Thanks I'll search the discussions...

RAID moduals can vary greatly between Linux disrobutions as some disrobutions will use non-free blobs and some wont. Generally speaking to get the best hardware RAID support you will want newer kernels than what is available in Fedora 6. As a rule of thumb if you RAID cost less than $150 (US) then it is a (on chip) software RAID (typically referred to as a non-RAID in Linux). Controllers that cost more are typically "real" hardware RAIDs and near always supported by the Linux kernel during the install.

Thanks, I am using an onboard RAID chip on the A8n-SLI Deluxe. I just figured out what my problem was, I had WinXP (which locked me out) RAID 0 across two raptors. Win/Linux wouldnt see the drives, obviously for WinXP you need to preinstall the RAID drivers, which I couldnt because who has a floppy drive these days?

Chipset isn't supported by Win7 - but some people have had it working.

Back to the problem, which was I didnt see the drives in Windows installations, and I also couldnt see any in Fedora

It was because of the old RAID0 FS on the drives neither would see it. So I ripped the drives out of the desktop, manually formatted each one externally. Stuck them back into the desktop, and now linux is seeing them.

But Windows still isnt seeing them. :( Im thinking SATA controller...?

My final goal is to get a duel boot with Win and Linux on RAID0 (onboard). But the first step is making sure both installations can actually install because I going to partition both disks 50% each drive for Win and 50% each drive for Linux.

If you have any advice on why windows doesn't detect the HDD's, it would be much appreciated! Smart ass comments are always welcome too! :)

ah Win.. so lovely...

anyway... sounds like you are going to need to re-master your Win CD (or at least the setup files) to include the drivers for your controller. I have some handy Win forum links on my website under "Support" that I think you will find very handy in doing this.
