installing pxscan scanner driver

I have an old parallel port scanner and have downloaded the pxscan-0.41 driver for it. I am running VectorLinux5.8 SOHO (it is based on Slackware 11.0, I think), with Linux kernel I got as far as extracting the driver files, but I didn't succeed in compiling it. There is a Makefile which probably needs to be modified, but when I try to run the command [make], I get an error message about no target and no Makefile found. I am working as root within the directory /usr/local/pxscan-0.41.

What step am I missing or doing wrong? I tried ./configure, but that didn't work either.
