Installing PCMCIA Modem

I just purchased a PCMCIA Zonet 56K modem, which is a hardware modem.

When I plugged it into the slot, VectorLinux 2.0 seems to have picked it up and I hear the beeping sound.

When I run setserial command to configure it, it seems to set it up but one thing I noticed is different and that is the I/O. Using Win98se the specs for the modem card is set to Com3, 0x3e8, and I/O is 10. But under Linux its ttyS2, 0x3e8, and I/O is 4. I guess I need to see if there's a conflict with those I/O numbers.

Anyway I can't seem to get the modem to dial out. I don't hear any dialing sound after setting up ppp to dial from the command line. What am I missing?

Any ideas/suggestions on how to set this up or what I may need to check?

Thnx.

IBM Thinkpad 380XD, 96mb of ram, Kernel v. 2.4.17.

Check your IRQ's in the bios and see if anything is sharing that port. Try moving your modem to another slot.
