Installing Nvidia driver 71.86

I am setting up a old computer with Lubuntu 14.04.3 with a Nvidia Riva TNT2 M64 video card and I am trying to install the driver 71.86 but I get the error
Quote:

/lib/modules/3.13.0-65-generic/build/include/linux/version.h does not exist
how can I fix this error or will this old video card work fine with the new video drivers?

Nouveau supports your card. To use nVidia binary driver you need kernel sources installed.

well the problem is that the Nouveau Driver causes the computer to keep freezing, the computer runs fine after uninstalling the driver.

and i thought the old gforce2 mx 400 on my 15 year old desktop was old needing the 96 driver

bad news
all of the current X11's are too new for the 71 nvidia.run
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-d...15-driver.html

you will NEVER be able to use that driver on ubuntu 14.04 xorg is just WAY TOO NEW

some older legacy support OS's might
have a look at CentOS 5.11
even for my GForce-2 i have to DOWNGRADE x11 to use the 96nvidia.run on Cent6.7
( downgraded to the version in 6.3 - xorg 1.12)

if Nouveau is not working on such a old card as yours
there is not to much else
use a OS that has a OLD ( very old) x11

if CentOS 5.11 is too new there is CentOS 4.9 - but that is a dead and unsupported OS

i am guessing that the 71 driver will need Xorg of 1.10 or OLDER (xfree 6.8)
the readme for the 71 driver mentions xfree86 6.8

CentOS 5.11 uses xorg 1.11
CentOS 4.9 used the old xfree86 6.8 xorg

now the 71 driver was last updated in 2011 so it ? Might? use the xorg 1.11

Hi...

Welcome to the forum :)

Is this a desktop system or a laptop? If a desktop, I'm wondering if a video card upgrade might make using this system with Linux more workable. What is the motherboard and is the video from an onboard graphics chip or an actual card? Does it have an AGP slot and if so, what is the speed, 1X, 2X, 4X or 8X?

Regards...

Ok here is where I am. This computer is going to be a web server that I'm building so I just need to use the video to work on it and check it. The Nouveau Driver causes the computer to keep freezing so I removed it and it seems to run fine now. After running the command lshw -c video under configuration it says Driver=Nouveau latency=64. Will this driver work fine or should I try a spare GeForce4 MX440 I got. Like I said I'm only using the video to check it and work on it, the rest of the time the monitor will be off.

Hi...

It looks like you're using the same driver but if it works fine now, you can use it as it is. ;)

the gforce4 card( a gforce2 basically) uses the 96 driver
that is FULLY supported in CentOS 5.11
out of the box no hacking needed

i use sl 6.7 but have to downgrade xorg from 1.13 to 1.12
