Installing new NIC on Debian system

Hey gang at LinuxQuestions,

I have a Debian server where I've replaced the NIC. Now eth0 won't come up. I don't know how to add a NIC since they get auto detected at install. lspci does show a 3Com 3c59x but ifup eth0 fails.

Any clues?

Are you on a LAN? Do you need to register the new MAC address with the lan?

Debian usually remembers nic's. Your new card is probably eth1 or eth2 now.

Look into /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules

See what it says and you can delete or modify data in there.

Thanks for both replies

I appreciate your help. I found the answer.

In lsmod, there are 2 drivers for this NIC. When I kill one of them, bringing up eth0 works perfectly. I just have to get it to work at bootup, but otherwise it's working now.
