Installing Mandriva LE 2005 on Seagate External HD

Hi
I was trying to install mandrake LE 2005 on my external hard drive. Its a seagate 160 gb drive (ST3160026A-RK). I was able to boot from the cd drive and then mandriva would see the external drive and i was able to select the different partitions on it. But when i actually tried partitioning it, it would give me an error. I was sitting with a friend who uses linux and we took a look at the command line using the ctrl+alt+f3/f2/f4 etc and saw that it kept on timing out with the usb connection. I have a usb 2.0 and thats what i was using to connect to the drive. Does anyone know what i can do to get rid of this error/ or a possible workaround for this?
The error message i was getting was :
usb 3-2: device not accepting address 3, error -71
Thanks
Nikhil

Welcome to LQ!
Ok,
1st check it on a different PC to know if it's the drive problem,
2d It may need to be mounted first,
3rd check it for errors.

1 -- Do you mean try using it with a different windows?
2 -- What do you mean mounted first -- as in mounting it in linux? I ended up partitioning my laptop hd and install linux. I can mount the drive easily there. No problems in that.
3 -- How do i check it for errors?
I am sorry if any of these are really dumb questions -- this is the first time i am trying to use something other than windows.
