Installing Mandrake Linux on an external HD enclosure

I am a complete newbie to Linux. What I am trying to do is install Mandrake Linux on a USB external HD enclosure that has an IDE HD in it. I want to be able to connect the enclosure to my laptop, which has Windows XP, so that I have a choice of loading Windows XP off of the laptop HD or Mandrake Linux off of the enclosure. I am a complete newbie so the more basic the help the better.

Thanks
Kyle

we need to confirm that both computers will have a boot option for usb prior to internal hard drives etc......my mobo does but you will need to check both your laptop and your desktop if they are possible.

2) I gather you want some portability and lack space to dual boot the laptop?
