Installing BCJ-80 printer caused X to stop working - black screen

I have been using Red Hat Linux 9 (kernal version 2.4.20-8) for a while, but still very much a newbie.

I recently installed a Canon BJC-80 printer. Everything worked fine until I unplugged it one day before swtiching on the computer. The "check new hardware" program (forgotten it's name, but runs at boot-up) then detected that it had gone and asked me if I wanted to remove the configuration. I chose the option called "Do nothing", hoping that it would just carry on as normal when I connected the printer again. However, this is not the case. Now when the system tries to start X for a graphical login (which it does automatically at boot-time) the screen goes black and nothing happens. After a few seconds the text login prompt returns, then disappears again as the system tries to start X again. This goes on and on with no error messages. However, the system is obviously completely unusable as I can't get it to stop trying to start X. This seems to happen regardless of whether the printer is plugged in or not.

Does anyone know how I can stop it from trying to start X so that I can actually investigate the problem? Also, perhaps someone knows the solution?

Any help would be much appreciated

David
