installing an external modem... help


guys here's the situation.. i am using an internal modem now.. HSF kind and also have the FREE MODEM DRIVER from linuxant...so now am using my internet connection in linux(BUT SINCE ITS FREE..THE CONNECTION IS SLOW)..the question is...

i am going to change my internal modem to an external one, AFTER UNINSTALLING MY INTERNAL MODEM... DO I NEED TO UNINSTALL ALSO THE FREE MODEM DRIVER? ? ? OR STICK WITH IT TO BE USED WITH THE EXTERNAL ONE?

External modems such as the US Robotics types are compatible with Linux. If your distro doesn't automatically detect the modem when you connect it to your serial port, you will have to edit the soft link /dev/modem so that it points to your serial port. I've used one in the past, and it worked fine.

hmm ok.. so after plugging the external modem..how cn i configure it? and do i need to uninstall the free modem driver or not?

You don't necessarily need to uninstall the old driver. First just connect the external modem and see if it gets auto-detected. If it does your done! If not, let us know what happens after connection. We'll get it to work.

yeah i have done this already .. thanks for the help. . .i just plugged the port at com1 ; it read as sttyS0 in linux... thanks a lot
