Installing a usb printer -- where the hell do i start?

Hi,

Im a windows user moving over to linux due to the programming tasks of this new course im doing - linux just makes things a hell of a lot faster and easier.

Im currently using Fedora core 2, and it didn't recognise my USB printer. I recently migrated from mandrake 10.0 because i didn't really like it that much (i think my ISOs were screwed so i kept getting dependency errors).

I've recompiled my kernel for NTFS support and everythings up and running: sound, nvidia card etc. Its just the printer. On mandrake it recognised my printer as a lexmark, and even though its a compaq ij600 it worked fine (im pretty sure this model is identical to the lexmark z32 or z-something).

I have no clue as to where i start -- if anyone could help me that'd be great -- and dw im not afraid of the command line

thanks in advance.

well, i'm on RH9 and my HP is doing fine. There are some handy tools redhat provides that you can use to manually pick the printer, i wouldn't know. On my RH9 the package is called "redhat-config-printer-gui" or just "redhat-config-printer". Try it, it just might work.
