Installing a radeon 9800 pro

im currently trying to install the propriatery ati linux drivers for my video card. on the ati website there is a program to download called check.sh www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/check.sh this is supposed to tell me what version of xfree86 i have, so i can download the correct driver. after chmoding this file to execute, every time i run it it closes the terminal window really quick, so its hard to see what it says. im pretty sure it says 2.3, but last time i installed the 2.3 driver, X would not start, it gave me an error using the startx command(i dont know what it was, but i do know it was caused by that driver)

but for now im just trying to read that check.sh file.

can anyone help me out with that?

im running:
Suse 9.1 download version
amd athlonxp 2200+
gigabyte GA-7vaxp mobo w/ 512 ram
160 gig hd(hda)
hda1(ntfs c)
hda5(ntfs d)
40 gig hd(hdb)
hdb ext3 w/ 3 gig swap partition

i cant shift page up because the terminal actually closes. but i did open up 40 consoles, so all i had to do was hit enter.. then i hit enter really quick, and it flickerd enopugh that i could read it.... but i still have no idea why it closes, it must be some coding in the check.sh file.

Did you log in as superuser before attempting to run it?

I seem to remember exactly this happening (i. e. on installing the official Nvidia drivers for my GeForce MX440) - i. e. the window closing so fast (with an error) that I couldn't read what it said.

As far as I know the installer need to be run as root. Become root, then run it. The window that "jumps" closed is because the installer assumes you ARE root, and then dumps you to a normal user as a precaution (it seems?). If you are NOT root when running it, it won't just dump you back up to normal user level it closes the whole window since it calls "exit".

Regards,

Forget that POS check.sh, just get the driver pkg that matches your X server.
Note that for Xorg-6.7 you need the XFree-4.3 pkg.

...that script never worked well and is long obsolete by now.
