Question Installed Redhat--Monitor Problems!!!

Hello,

I installed Redhat Linux on an 80 gig hd that I installed on my Windows XP machine. Everything worked perfectly on my 21" Sony triniton Monitor. No problems whatsoever UNTIL I took it to the rightful owner who owns a 17" Sony Monitor 200es. It was giving a message: OUT OF SCAN RANGE, and it wouldn't even go into Linux. I took the PC back to my house and changed the monitor settings on Linux and the resolution. Now my friend says that she is getting a completely blank, black screen.

What is the problem? and how do I fix this???

Thanks alot!!

Marie

Both monitors probably do not have the same capacities as far as refresh rates & resolutions go. When you configure X at your house, X detects the capacities of your monitor ( which are probably way above your friend's monitor ).

Edit /etc/inittab & change id:5:initdefault: to id:3:initdefault: ( so that it doesn't start X by default ). Install the HDD on her machine. Edit XF86Config & modify the monitor section with her monitor's capabilities ( HorizSync & VertRefresh ), reset 5 as inittab & reboot ( or as root simply type init 5 ).
