After upgrading Bodhi to ver. 2.2 my Brother printer (HL-5040) stopped printing. The system knows that it is attached via USB. I have eliminated all of the possibilities of a hardware issue. When I send a print job to the printer nothing prints. PDF files used to print but nothing from LibreOffice or Thunderbird will print. Test pages won't print either. I can print a test page from a live distro like Mint, however, which leads me to think that this is a OS software problem.
The CUPS message: "Can't write stdin to temporary file" keeps appearing when I try to print a test page after deleting and installing the printer from the
http://localhost:631 page. A search on google tells me that /var may be full of cached packages. One person suggested that emptying it with synaptic may be the answer. I checked "status" in synaptic and under "not installed (residual config) I find:
cupswrapperhl5040, hl5040lpr, konqueror, libkonqsidebarplugin4a, linux-image-3.2.0.25-generic, wine1.4, and wine1.4-i386. Konquer and wine are not installed but were at one time. Can I mark these for removal? Would they be residing in the /Var file?
And...when checking the contents of the /var with the terminal, the /tmp folders are highlighted with green. Is that significant?
This problem has been with me for a week and I can't seem to get a fix and I can't seem to find a similar issue in this section of LQ. Any suggestions?
