Unhappy installation problems

Hello,
hope someone can help.. When I try to install redhat 9 (any distro really) on my home pc (amd athlon, using a plextor plexwriter cd/rw), I have a big problem. The installation goes smoothly until i tries to copy the install image to the hard drive. The process locks up and I have to reboot.
I've read/heard somewhere that perhaps this has to do with the DMA settings and that I might be able to work around it if I used the NODMA setting on the linux command line when the install starts. Does anyone know the correct syntax of that command?
Better yet does anyone know how to work around this problem?
thanks so much.
John H.

At the install prompt type "linux ide=nodma". You can also try disabling the BIOS settings.
