Yep, the default RH8 kernel was 2.4.18, which Redhat ran with despite it being older then dirt. SATA didn't even exist back when 2.4.18 was finalized in 200...1? Regardless, SATA support wandered into the kernel with the Silicon Images chipset around 2.4.21, and I think the Intel ICH5 is finally supported in 2.4.22 or 23. They appear as scsi devices most of the time at last check. If ICH5 isn't in there yet, I know from experience it works under the Cox tree. Does your Uni require installing 8.0? I only ask because the one I just quit working for had their CS kids in their intro compilers class still stuck back at 7.3 so I got a lot of questions on getting new hardware to work with the rock solid, but again older then dirt 2.4.18 it also came with. Even RH9 is way behind now, you might want to consider a jump to Fedora Core 1, the default kernel is 2.4.22 and I think if you run the auto-upgrader (its not up2date anymore, its probably yum), it'll get you up to current with 2.4.24, and that should support everything you've got onboard.
Closing this one for cleanliness's sake. If you're ever getting 0 replies, feel free to mail me with a link to the thread, I'll see what I can do, but don't just post again...
