If I recall well that driver had an issue with the sound
on ALSA. It muted your sound card, and when running
`alsamixer' command nothing happened. But that was with
kernel series 2.6.11.x, so may be the driver is better
now.

Anyway this is how I activated that module for kernel
2.6.11 in a Slackware box, it might be differente directory
structures for you but this procedures can help you understand
better what you have to do, and ofcourse there could be
a better way....

You need to be familiar with kernel compiling, if not,
there are plenty guides you can google for, you can also
search for LQ member shilo's sticky on Slackware forum
for kernel compiling.

Well, after you run `make menuconfig' look in:
Device Drivrers -> Sound -> Advanced Linux Sound Architechture ->
PCI Devices. Select [VIA 82C68A/B, 8233 based modems] option
as module. Save and finish kernel compilation.

Uncomment or add `snd-via82xx-modem' to your `rc.modules',
where ever that is in Mandrake.

That should be all you need, you could just restart you
daemons but I suggest you to restart the computer and take
a close look at the alsa messages.

When you are booted up try running `asamixer' if you
don't have any muting problems or `alsamixer' freezing
problems you just got started, you can go on with
the rest of you modem config.

-Good Luck
