I need to buy a new inkjet/bubblejet (whatever the technology is up to these days) printer but my Internet connection is horribly slow making it impossible to search with google.

Can someone suggest a simple (as possible) printer, black and white if possible. I have no need for copier, scanner etc. The less power it uses the better as it is to work on a solar system.

Your best bet is probably Hewlett-Packard. H-P provides HPLIP software (probably already installed on your system) with full support for everything they make -- you set up your printer with hp-setup and it makes the CUPS hookups for you.

You didn't mention what sort of interface you're looking for. There are wireless and USB models (and Ethernet, too) with prices ranging from $40 USD to $75 USD or so for "all-in-oneders" (black, color, scanner with can come in handy now and again). These units don't use a whole lot of electricity, either just sitting there or when printing. And, with HPLIP, you don't have to deal with "no Linux support" (as with Canon and some others) -- H-P supports Linux, the other guys don't seem to.

Don't know what's available in Australia but I'd bet there there are retailers somewhere closer to you than the US that you can contact for pricing and availability. Might be worth a look-see.

I have ordered a HP Officejet 6000 (printer only as I have no use for copy, scan, fax).
I found what you got to check is "postage and handling", some vendors advertise a low price for the goods but charge a lot in postage and handling. One advertise it "delivery included" but when I came to the "check out", it still added the charge.
This printer has a RRP of AU$129 on HP's site and I got a deal for under AU$122 including delivery after trying to eliminate those vendors charging a lot on postage and handling.
I may update this post when I receive the goods.

One thing, though. You might want to check that (1) you have HPLIP installed on your system and (2) that the installed version (which may be old) includes support for the Officejet 6000.

If HPLIP is installed, there should be a directory /usr/share/hplip/data/models containing a file models.dat. If you grep "HP Officejet 6000 Wireless Printer" models.dat that will tell you. And, of course, the "hplip" directory might be who-knows-where depending upon where your distribution installed it (locate hplip can be handy).

If that's missing, you may want to go to http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html and get the current version (3.12.4); yeah, it's a pain to download but it might be worth it. If you distribution has a package that might be an alternative.

Anyway, hope this helps some.
