Infrared Remote for Kodi on Core2Duo laptops
Dear all,
I recently received 2 Fujitsu Siemens laptops from a friend, an E8110 and an S6410, with Core2Duo CPUs, 2GB of RAM - and an old style Infrared port on each of them. I would like to install Kodi on them and control it with an IR remote of a DVD player. But I can't get the IR part to work.
In the BIOS I can switch IR mode between IrDA and FIR. AFAIK FIR is the way to go, but all I see is this entry in the dmesg log:
[ 1.651566] serial 00:07: skipping CIR port at 0x2e8 / 0x0, IRQ 3
I tried with these distro/kernel combinations:
Linux Mint 20.2 / 5.4
Linux Mint 19.2 / 4.15
MX Linux 19 / 4.4, 4.9, 4.19, 5.10
All with the same result. LIRCD says there is no hardware it can initialize, and hardinfo shows no sign of an infrared device. There's nothing like /sys/class/rc or /lib/udev/rc_keymaps on both laptops. I also double checked that the hardware switch for Wifi/Bluetooth/Infrared is turned on.
Could anyone please advise what to do to get this working? What does the above dmesg line mean? Why does the kernel not bind this CIR device to /dev/something? Do I have to load a certain kernel module?
I'd really like to build this up with Linux and parts I have lying around rather than buying something new.
Kind regards
