Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Information about usb devices and peripherals

How can we find out the hardware information about the usb devices or other peripherals like PS2 keyboard, mouse, webcam etc? Is there a command to find out the exact hardware inventory information? lsusb or lshw doesn't give descriptive hardware information like manufacturer etc.

-- Thanks

lsusb -v is pretty descriptive.

also try looking in dmesg or sudo tail -f /var/log/messages while plugging in a usb device.

I don't see any class for keyboard/mouse etc in lshw output. It shows only the keyboard controller as below.

<capability id="int9keyboard" >i8042 keyboard controller</capability>

How you are getting it? what is the class?

Hi schneidz,

lsusb -v is descriptive. Are there similar stuff to find out other peripherals like serial, ps2 etc. udev provides alerts but finding it difficult to match the pattern. Is there anything under /sys, /proc filesystme through which i can get. I see keyboard, mouse under input devices but vendor information is missing.

i think you were lucky enough to get that much info about your keyboard in lshw(i dont even get that ).. actually i meant that in general it shows the vendor name for peripheral devices like ethernet, sound, graphics etc etc.
