Incorrect keymappings in sabayon

What can i say the keymaps are wrong.

I have a standard british laptop keyboard.
When i set it to GB_itl most keys are fine but the cursor keys do nothing.
When i set it to US I get strange symbols instead of the symbols that should come up.

How can this be resolved.

I am prepared to create my own keymap file and add it to the list, but i would need to know how
