Incompatible Ram Speed?

Hi everyone, I want to upgrade the ram in my netbook to 2 GB (stupid windows 7 starter will only see 1 GB anyway, but linux has no such limitations...
The manual says that it is capable of using 1 2 GB ddr3 stick, but it doesn't tell me what speed to use. Also, the BIOS doesn't tell me what the speed of the existing ram. So, if I buy ram that is rated faster than the maximum speed supported by the system, will it just run slower, or will it cause capatibility issues?

Buying RAM for a netbook is a difficult task. What I had to do is take the netbook to the store and have them try out different RAM sticks. They tried 6 different ones and only 2 worked, so I bought both.
