imwheel problems with SuSE

i have recently attempted to configure imwheel based on a few threads here and http://www.groundhog1.com/mouse/MSExplorer.html and here http://linux.netpimpz.com/mx700/ for my Intellimouse. etc/X11/XF86Config for my mouse looks like this

Code:
Section "InputDevice"
  Driver "mouse"
  Identifier "Mouse[1]"
  Option "ButtonNumber" "7"
  Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
  Option "Name" "Autodetection"
  Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
  Option "Vendor" "Sysp"
  Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"
where the only changes i made were zaxismapping and button number. i verified this with xev and continued. next i added the line

/usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5" to /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

this also gave me no problems. after that i read that i needed to create a file in my home dir called .imwheelrc to have the mouse buttons work automatically on startup but when i tried to create a text file called that nothing happened, or so i thought. when told a path is ~/foo please tell me, is that /home/username/foo like i thought it was? because now when i try to log in on kdm i am only able to do so with failsafe. after every change i restarted X and started a new session to verify, and until the .imwheelrc i was fine. what have i broken and how can i fix it? i've been using linux for about 8 months now no problem, and then this comes along and wipes out most of the progress i've made. any help would be greatly appreciated.

well i fixed the problem by reverting to the default versons of xinitrc and now im back to normal. would someone be kind enough to walk me through this whole process in a bit more detail than either of those sites have? i have my side buttons working in Firefox before i tried any of this, but regardless i want to enable the alt+left/right mapping to make it work with all file/web browsers
