Impossible to install linux on an emachine?
I read on an e-machines fan site and forum that its nearly impossible to install linux on an e-machine. I haven't tried this myself... yet. However, I have had other machines that most distributions would NOT work on, but I always managed to find a certain one or another that would fire everything up. I suppose what I'm going to ask is... has anyone tried (and failed) to install *nix on an e-machine? Tried and succeeded? I do a LOT of customizing of old pc's to see what I can make them do, and the idea of linux on an "e" sounds quite interesting. So, anyone that has tried... let me know your experiences, ok?

I had Suse 9.1 working on an e-machine PC with no problems. I imagine with current distros that should be no problem. To name just a few: SuSe, Mandriva, Mepis.

I am a with an eMachine model W2646 that I'm having a HECK of a time getting to work with Linux. My main problem appears to be my nVidia card that I added and my monitor. I have done the YOU online update and got the nVidia patch but it still doesn't grok my monitor - ncurses is no where to be found even tho I installed ncurses-devel. Man, this is fun!! Been too long since I WASN'T a newbie to computer stuff

My emachine long since has been modified. Now its just a trigem napoli II board, plain and simple. Everything quit fighting me at that point. As for your comment about fun and how long its been since you werent a newbie...myself as well. Im about to install a freshly purchased copy of mandriva powerpack '06. I had some serious system-wide problems this weekend on Winblows XPoop... Lost 120gb of important data collected over the last 8 years, toasted my radeon 9200 (that wasnt as big of a concern) and fought me formatting or even repairing that drive for over 36 hours. Granted, I got everything back via a file recovery program... but Ive not had problems like that on any linux EVER.... so I think its time to go back and learn all over again. So I guess, from one born again noob to another... have loads of fun. I will...
