Impossible to burn CD or DVD with LG GHSA H42N
Hi guyz,
I recently installed Debian Squeeze i386. I managed to install NVIDIA drivers for my 9800GT, ndiswrapper for my WG311v3 Wi-Fi card. But I still have one big issue with my DVD player a LG GHSA H42N. It plays CDs and DVDs but can't burn 'em. I tried with Brasero and Nero Linux, with different CD and DVD brands. Each time I get an "unknown error" message during the burning process and the CD tray comes out. And there is much better ! If I put the CD back in the player, it switches off the computer ! Even in BIOS mode .... I update the player firmware from RL00 to RL01 - which did nothing. I googled everywhere to find a solution but there seems to be none. I don't expect much help, but this is just to say that linux still as a long way to go in terms of hardware support... PS : this LG DVD player works and burns perfectly under Windows ... |
Make sure you are part of the cdrom or what ever group that can write CD/DVD. Also make sure you have cdrecord and growisofs.
It is not that drive is not supported. Blaming Linux that is not supported is selfish and immature. A lot of companies are cutting corners by not including all commands in specifications. Sure your drive may work in Windows, but Windows tends to not comply to specifications. I bet you the drive sometimes work in Windows, but only times you use it is when it works. LG is not a reliable and stable brand. I do not recommend them to anybody. Sure they are cheap, but it shows that they do not care about reliability and stability. I have an LG drive that just does not recognizes discs. Also I placed the drive in different IDE channels and set it to either Master or Slave. Does this tell you that LG gives a crap about making quality devices. No they do not. Get an optical drive from a better brand like ASUS or Plextor. |

[QUOTE] I am new to this site but I use Debian at work for some time now and my problem really comes from hardware support as files are burnt on the discs but can't be read. Quote:
As a user you just don't care that this brand doesn't comply to this or that standard. You see an item working under a given OS, you exepect it to work under Linux - that's all. Despite those flaws, I'll stick with Linux. But what would the lambda user do ? Change his optical drive or go back to Window$ ? Think about it. |
Problem solved by changing optical drive
I changed my optical drive for an ASUS DRW-22B2L. Now everything works fine.
So guys, Beware on LG drives with Linux ! |
