Image "corruption" with CanoScan LiDE 200 scanner
 

Hi,

I'm trying to use the CanoScan LiDE 200 scanner.

Under Windows the scanner works perfectly with the default windows drivers. Under linux, however (I tried with Fedora in a VM and also Arch Linux ARM on my Raspberry PI 2, same problem on both), the resulting image looks weird where the scanned paper was folded or has holes in it. For scanning, I used sane and the scanimage command.

Under windows, I also noted that the scanner uses much more time for the first time I scan a document (maybe due to some self-calibration?). This doesn't happen when using linux.

Does someone has an idea where this phenomenon comes from and how to avoid it under linux?

Welcome to LQ.

I use the Canon LiDE 210 model, which is basically the same machine, with Ubuntu 14.04 MATE.

It works perfectly using:

Applications > Graphics > Simple Scan

Document > Save as > abc123.jpg

Crossword.jpg attached.

It's not corruption so much as the fold and holes being more visible. I use Xsane and there are options to adjust things like the threshold. You can do a preview, to make sure that all's well. Also, if the page is text, use "line art" not "colour" or "greyscale".

Using the "Simple Scan" tool did not change the result.
Playing with the Xsane options also did not help. It's just changing the overall image, but the bright yellow pixels don't go away. Using lineart is not always an option for me.

I will try to organize another scanner to check if it's maybe just a problem with my scanner.

My Canon LIDE 200 also scans plain white paper as a light gray, but I can correct the color using XSane.

After XSane takes a preview scan, I can choose points on the scan image for the values white, gray, or black. If I choose a part of the gray background I can assign it the value white.

Printer ink is expensive enough without having text printed black on gray.

I have finally got a new scanner (CanoScan LiDE 220) which works perfectly now without changing anything in the configuration.
