ideas for building a remote?

hi all,

so i've got an installation of debian that just boots into the command line. i'm also running an mp3 music server out of this box that streams music all over our house.

i'd like to build a remote that can control the music server. i can write scripts to do things like play, forward, etc. however, i have no idea how to make a remote that can call these scripts. the remote doesn't even have to be cordless; i just am getting tired of opening my laptop everytime i want to change a song.

i've toyed with the idea of even extending a mousecord and just plugging that in. but, is it possible to get my server to listen to mouse clicks if the machine isn't booting into a gui?

any ideas are much appreciated!

Yes it's possible.
At the very least you could pipe your mouse device as standard input to a remote-control daemon process and listen to it directly.
I'm sure there's likely a much slicker way than this of doing it, but this way would work if nothing else

Does your laptop have one of those infared ports?

no, the server that the music is running off of is an 8-year old handbuilt desktop. it does have serial, parallel and ps/2 ports. it even has usb!

like i mentioned, i don't need a true wireless remote, i'd be more than happy with a corded remote.

i'll look into finding a "remote-control daemon"
