Ideal Video Card for Ubuntu 11.10

Can someone recommend a few video cards that work well with Ubuntu / Linux in general? Seems like anything nvidia should be good to go, but the last one I bought overheated with Ubuntu.

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

You can get useful information from LQ HCL.

There was a bug that caused overheating in the NVidia driver some time ago, but IIRC the wasn't in Linux alone, but also in Windows.
To your question, recommending a videocard is pointless as long as you give us no information what you want to do with it. Gaming? Do some professional 3D or CAD work? Or just "normal" use, like watching videos and have your desktop show 3D effects?

still in beta though.

Without knowing anything else about your system and your needs I blindly recommend nVidia because that's what I use. Ubuntu has drivers for most (maybe all?) modern nVidia cards, but in my experience they usually just work. You can also install nVidia's binary driver, which is what I use.

I'm not sure how much you're looking to spend but my Nvidia gtx460 works great in Ubuntu (and Linux in general).
