Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

IDE Raid Controllers for Fedora?

I am trying to set up RAID on a server running Fedora Core 2 (a seemingly simple task that has taken up more time than expected)

My options are

1) Use Software Raid
2) Use a Hardware IDE Raid Controller

I have been unable to get software raid to work. I mean, It appears to work, but If turn off the machine, and disconnect a drive, upon turning the machine back on, it gives me a blank blinking cursor. Perhaps I did this wrong (since I was unable to find any good info on it). If anyone has a good reference link for setting up software raid on fedora using disk druid, I would be forever grateful.

Assuming I go with a hardware raid, can anyone recommend a reliable (and inexpensive) IDE controller? I will be putting it into a DELL system, although if necessary, I can build a machine if necessary to get the controller to work without any aggrivation.

Thanks.

3ware has good hardware RAID controllers for both PATA and SATA drives. Though for servers I suggest SCSI hard drives because they have lower latency.

With software RAID controllers, you have to use the software RAID that is built in the kernel. This is because the drives that are setup through the software RAID controller will get detected by Linux.
