my computer (a 700mhz duron) quit working recently, linux will only boot up to the point where it gets to

Partition Check:
hda:

then crashes and must be physically turned off and back on to reboot

note this happens regardless of what hard drive i put in or where the hard drive is

any help would be appreciated
ps.
it happens even when booting from the install cd!

It sounds like the processor is going. My system did the same thing but it was both the motherboard and the processor. After a few weeks that I got it working, the power supply went.

I think your processor is a slot A. They can be found at Directron. You can check eBay but be careful. Don't buy Thunderbird Athlons unless your board supports them.

I suggest you put the hard drive on another system and mount it as read-only. Then copy the files using the perserve option to another hard drive.
