IDE, EIDE and ATA Drives

I have Ubuntu and a big group hard drives 40GB and bigger sitting on the shelf that I would like to wipe clean. most them have Windows on it. Can I swap out the second drive (cold) over and over to get them all formated and wiped?

You might want to try DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) CD. Stuff as many drives as you can connect in a pc, boot from the CD and erase them with any of the wiping schemes DBAN offers.
