IDE Controller Drivers

hello all,

My motherboard died recently. I am in need of getting a new one. I have five IDE drives i need to hook up to the mobo. Untill now i have been using one of the RAID slots to accomodate the fifth drive. However this has meant not being able to see the drive from the Linux partition (we are talking RH-9 2.4 and then FC-2 2.6) because of the need for propriety drivers to run the RAID chip (the chip in question was ITE-IT8212F prior to fry-up).
Before forking out the cash for a new mobo i would like to find out what are the Linux supported chips for either RAID or IDE PCI expansion cards. I do not require any RAID functionality i just need the extra ATA100 slot.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
G

hm... it's really strange that u have 5 ide dirves
most mobo only have 4 ide and 4 sata which is what i have
but i know either asus and gigabyte have mobo that have 8 ide and 2 sata
you might want to look for them on www.gigabyte.com and www.asus.com
and i will try to search it for u

yhank you for swift reply.

I know that these companies provide boards with more than 4 IDE channels. The question is that the extra channels are provided by extra chips (i.e. in addition to the south bridge) the problem is that these chips require drivers that are often propriety and thus not supported under Linux.

In my old mobo the chip was a ITE RAID chip. My question is which chips have drivers that have been ported to Linux 2.6?
Secondly I am not familiar with PCI expansion cards that provide extra IDE ports do these require drivers (i presume so) and are there any that have been ported to Linux 2.6?

Thanx.

I'm looking for an IDE-Controller too - so I searched the posts here and found yours. I'm actually undecided between Sil0680 or IT8212F (ITE) both offer RAID and cost about 15€. What experiences did you make with the ITE-Chipset?
