ibook g3 external monitor

hey i have an old ibook g3 600 mgz laptop (all white) with an mini-vga out port.

here in mac os i can connect my ibook to an external monitor and use it but in linux it doesnt seem to work. i tried it in ydl and ubuntu.

the command line output appears on my screen for installation, boot and all general use but no x. x will say that it has encountered an error and will go to a cl login and all be cl.

now i love the command line as much as anyone else but it doesnt satisfy my needs.

does anyone either know
1) a distro that will auto-configure this hardware and support my external monitor
or
2)know how to EASILY set it up from the command line.

thanks for the help.
