Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

IBM Magstar 3590 on Linux

Hi there,

my company just bought an used IBM Magstar 3590
tape drive. We want to attach it to a Linux box
and installed a Adaptec AHA2944UW SCSI card in
the PC. The card works fine and the tape drive
is recognized by the PC.

I've tested SUSE 7.0/8.0 (it's our usual OS)
and RedHat 7.2. Access to the tape isn't
possible with for example tar command.
mt -f /dev/st0 status works fine. RedHat
promises to support this type of tape drive
(http://www.redhat.com/about/presscen...ress_hess.html)

Does anybody have experience in setting up stinit.def
for the mt-st package??? I am also interested
in running a DLT1 but that isn't that urgent.

Thanks in advance

ggg
