Question i855Gm & 24bit !?

Hey

I've been struggling getting a ubuntu based HTPC up and running in an Aopen i855Gmem motherboard with onboard intel 855G graphics. My Samsung LE32M5 LCD only accepts 24 bit color depth and when looking at the 855 Bios (via 915resolution bios hack utility) it looks like it only supports 8, 16 and 32 bit color depth. Can this really be true? I haven't been able to get any resolution on my LCD (even low res) and the HTPC works fine when plugged into a Dell FP2001 20".

So my question is; does the Intel i855 graphic chip only support 8, 16 and 32 bit color depth?

Any information is greatly appriciated.

Regards

Specs: Aopen i855Gmem, P-M 1.86Ghz, Ubuntu 6.10, Kernel 2.6.19.3 custom

Replace your Screen section of
/etc/X11/xorg.conf (or XF86config-4)
by this:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen" -> Let the same Identifier line
Device "Intel" -> Copy the same Device line
Monitor "LCD" -> same
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768"
EndSubSection
EndSection

And try

I have 24 bit depth on this card. 855resolution didn't work well for me either.

hmm.. I've already have these settings in xorg.conf - however it still doesn't work. I get an error in the log EE telling me that the color depth is not supported in BIOS!? When I look at the BIOS settings with 915resolution -l, it only lists 8, 16 and 32 bit resolutions (pr. defualt - I've enabled a script which sets all resolutions to 24 bit on startup - still doesn't work).

So you only altered xorg.conf to enable 24 bit?
