I want my Flash (USB) Drive to work!

First let me begin by saying I did a search tried the suggestions in the post Ive found BUT NO GOOD  !

I have been trying to find out why I cannot get my Mini USB Flash Drive to work under Linux. I have the 256mb Cruzer from sandisk, and it works great under Mac OSX and XP Pro. I read on another forum that it worked flawlessly on another Distro but I cant seem to get it working in SuSE 8.2 pro.

Being the newbie I am Im still trying to get a grip on the OS. So Im trying to figure out a couple of things.

1. How do I see the Drives under Linux (hard,Disk, etc)? Like a disk admin of some sort. I figured if I can see this I would be able to see if the drive is listed.

2. How do I know if USB 2.0 is working. I know my USB is working as I have a scanner hooked up
to the ports on the back of the PC. Where Im trying the USB drive is via the front USB 2.0 ports.

Finally here is a post from someone who used the drive in question. I tried following the steps but again I could not locate the drive. And only can do part of his solution.

he found...

"as root"

/dev/sda1
as a scsi usb device.

Next he created a dir in /mnt/
mkdir /mnt/cruzer

I did this ^^^^^^^^^^^^

He then mounted the device with
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/cruzer

after that he was able to add, modify, delete files on the device.

He then set it up in ./etc/fstab

Hopefully someone here can assist, I really would like to have the drive working.

you never mentioned if you did a couple of them steps, like loading the modules (if necessary) so see if these links help..

Hi NauticX,

I had the very same problem trying to mount an usb-device (similar output with dmesg). Any try to mount the device using mount [opt] /dev/sda1 ./mnt provided the error /dev/sda1 is not a valid block-device.
After loading usb-storage with modprobe usb-storage mounting of the usb-device was no longer a problem.
Hope that this helps you with the problem.

Best regards, Chris

Moving to Linux - Hardware

Cool

Funny u say u couldn't get it to work from the first time!

I made it from the first try and saw only one post 'cause didn't knew what I should use for the emulation and mounting.

Maybe I was used to it because of the RW I installed just before the mass storage device.

And did it just for fun!!! didn't' need the data on it.

Hi there,
I just bought a cruzer mini 256 flash drive few days ago and I can't have it working in Linux (I'm using SuSE pro 8.2). I've read several of the post in this forum and googled for quit a long time, but I have been able to solve the problem. I would really appreciate any help.

Here is the info I've got:

I got this when I just insert the flash drive and it beeps. After a couple of seconds or so, it beeps again and I get this:

#dmesg

I tried typing modprobe usb-storage before with the same result. I also created the mount point and ad a line to my fstab file, so it looks like this:

linux:~ # cat /etc/fstab
/dev/hda3 / reiserfs defaults 1 1

I also uncommented the line

alias usb-interface usb-ohci

in the file /etc/modules.conf

I'm getting desperated, please help me...

N. B. sorry about the length, but I didn't want to leave info off.
