I/O Problems with USB Scanner

After a run of YOU (Yast Online Update on a Suse 9.0) xsane does not work any longer.

The scanner is obviously found, because if I request a preview scan, the scanner is hearable working for a short moment. But instead of a scan after a timeout I receive the error msg

"Fehler beim Lesen: Fehler während Geräte I/O" (in english something like: "read error: error during device I/O")

What should I check first?

Background information (don't know, if necessary to solve the problem)

sane-find-scanner results in:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9, product=0x220e) at /dev/usb/scanner0
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9, product=0x220e) at /dev/usbscanner
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x220e [CanoScan]) at libusb:001:005

scanimage -L gives:
device `plustek:/dev/usbscanner' is a Canon N1240U/LiDE30 USB flatbed scanner
