I need advice to rebuild my desktop

Hi,
After proudly blowing up my motherboard, I want to build a new linux box. I don't know much on hardware and I don't want to spend more than $150.

I have;
- 512mb DDR SDRAM
- 80gb DMA/ATA-100 harddisk
- CD R/W
- DVD-ROM
- Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz but I' am not sure whether it is working (is there a way to check it?)

I need;
- a case (old case was a total headache),
- motherboard (on board sound and network cards are preferred) and cpu (if mine is not working)
- a quiet psu

You'll be limited in your choice of mboard if you intend to keep your DDR ram. DDR2 has been standard for quite a while and is not pin-compatible with DDR.

If you plan to upgrade your memory, you'll probably spend a lot more than $150 on the resulting domino effect (Socket 775/AM2, PCIe, S-ATA etc)

Another option is looking for 2nd hand parts, which will be much cheaper and allow you to use some of your old stuff
