Hi, I am completely new to Linux. I have successfully installed Sabayon Linux 3.3 and my nvidia 8800 GTX is working properly without any issues.

The problem is with my soundcard. An X Fi Elite Pro. Which I know is not yet supported by ALSA drivers.

But before this experiment I installed Vmware inside Vista Ultimate x64. I installed Linux and the sound worked. The card was supposedly this "ES1371". I've read that VMware uses a virtual soundcard or something like that.

The thing is that sound worked with linux inside VMware, WHY shouldn't it work in a "real" installation, such as the one I am currently using??

I am currently dual booting: Vista and Sabayon.

I have no knowledge of Linux at all. So the steps are always like Chinese to me inside Linux. Why isn't there an executable or whatever so I can double click and get the drivers working??

I don't know much about vmware. I guess, as an emulator it actually uses the windows sound driver to output the sound. So, in the native linux environment you don't have working sound drivers for your sound card and so, it won't work.

Have you tried contacting the ALSA team ? Ask them, beg them to start working on developing a driver for your sound card ?

The operating system running inside of VMWare does not interact or see the real hardware of your computer, it only sees the hardware that VMWare is emulating. The OS that is actually running the VM server (in this case, Vista) is the one that is interacting with the hardware and needs the drivers for it.

Since Vista supports your sound hardware, it worked.

Hi, I solved my problem by installing the sound card that came with my motherboard (ASUS Striker Extreme). It comes with a SupremeFX soundcard that was detected by Sabayon perfectly...
