What do I need to do to get Linux to use them.

The current issue of Linux Format has a wonderful article on ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture). In the article it mentions that Linux starts out with the sound muted. I am a newbie myself, but I think you need to do a search or ask someone how to un-mute Mandrake.

Goto Bongfish's message posted about a page to a page-and-a-half below to find out how to un-mute your Mandrake.
