I have a new printer - what should I tell my Linux O.S. ?
I have a new printer - what should I tell my Linux O.S. ?
I had an HP laser printer that my Ubuntu 20.x recognized.
When I trash my broken printer and hook up my new HP printer, what should I do to tell my Ubuntu Linux to recognize it, or will it be plug and play and just recognize it?
Addendum: The usb cord didn't come with my new HP laserjet printer & the old usb cord from the other printer doesn't seem to plug into it. It bosts it's wireless, but I know my old hp desktop isn't. what type of usb cord i need to plug into it?
the new printer is a black and white hp laserjet called model # : m209dwe

helpneeded,
Does the HP Laserjet M209dwe have a USB port?
The printer has USB 2.0, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet connectivity, and for mobile printing the M209dwe is compatible with HP Smart App, Apple AirPrint, and Mopria.
The usual procedure is to connect a printer cable, install hplip, then follow the “walkthrough” instructions.
Go here:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-i.../install/index
Click on Download HPLIP>> and select your Linux flavour.
In Terminal select the location of the downloaded hplip-3.23.5.run file (in this case Desktop) and then run these commands (pressing Enter after each command):
Code:
cd Desktop
sh hplip-3.23.5.run
Then follow the interactive instructions.

Thanks for the information. I will follow it when I get a cable. Unfortunately, HP only included a power cable and not a usb cable for it. And the USB cable isn't the same as the old hp usb cable I have - they must have changed the type of usb cable that hooks up to their newer printers, eh? Is their a name for this new cable for me to find and purchase?

helpneeded,
Printer cables are not usually supplied with printers.
Looks like a normal USB A to B printer cable which is readily available everywhere.
USB Cable For HP LaserJet M209DW, M209DWE Printer:
Available: In Stock
• Works with HP LaserJet M209DW, M209DWE Printer.
• Supports USB 2.0 data transfer rates up to 480 Mbps.
• USB A to B printer cable helps you maximize performance for your peripherals. For devices with an older USB version, this cable is backward compatible.
• Features foil & braid shielding, copper twisted-pair construction providing excellent performance.

Thanks. Just to make sure, my trashed HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fn had a different cable connection for the USB, right? Or am I just not plugging it in right - ?

helpneeded,
Almost all printer USB cables are universal. They usually have a USB Type-A connector on one end and a USB Type-B connector in another end. This is because most computers have a Type-A port and printers have a Type-B port.
The square-shaped Type-B end of the printer cable will only fit one way, probably on its side.
Note that one side of the Type-B end is domed.
I suspect that you are not plugging it in correctly.

I tried plugging it in every which way - but I'll try again now. It looks like the cable from the other printer but is being difficult. Let me try again.
I do not know, however, why HP wouldn't include a usb for the printer anyways - maybe they expect everyone to do it wireless since it's also a wireless printer - I don't think my Ubuntu 20.x can do wireless - I know my HP desktop is like 10 years old but still kicking. The computer is the HP EliteDesk G1 SFF - I've put a 1 terabyte SDD in it and 16 gigs of ram and it runs just as fast as a new Windows box.
Update: It had a little sticker on the back that had a wirless symbol and had USB with a slash through it. I took the sticker off and under the sticker was a perfect place for the usb cable. Now, I need to get it up and running.

Ok, I did the above but printer won't print. When I attempt to print, it comes on for a few seconds then goes off but no printing.
Also, I got this error in terminal:

Funny thing is when I tell it to print it fires up and acts like it's going to for like 5 seconds then just stops.

A few things: - The printer is wifi capable, and from your previous (numerous) posts, your system is wifi. Since plugging in the USB cable gave you trouble, it may be better to set it up as a network printer.
- The screenshot said that the HP Systray wasn't running; did you set it to auto-start at login, and did you log out/back in/reboot after doing so??
- Have you checked to see if CUPS is installed/running? It should be from where you had your other printer set up and installed previously.
- Have you checked to see if the queue is set up by running "lpstat -a" from a terminal??
Might want to check any of your other printer-related threads that go back years, and try the advice given there, since this is the same system and you're still working with HPLIP:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...er-4175572109/
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...it-4175625762/
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...879/page2.html
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...or-4175723600/
May also want to follow up in your other thread that was marked SOLVED with the solution:

helpneeded,
Maybe there is a solution but there are several unflattering comments on this HP M209dwe printer here:

It's mentioned in one of your several other printing-related threads, quoted in my reply. You were also given a command to run to check your print queues; did you run it??
