I have a Leadtek remote control and I'm getting a conflict

I'm using a Leadtek remote control on Ubuntu 7.10 and it appears to work. I'm getting a signal and it lets me turn the volume up and down as well as use enter as return and the power button works but that's it. I created an .lirc file in my home directory and configured it for MythTV and Mplayer but no matter what the remote isn't responding to these events but keeps using the volume up/down, return, and power sequence above. I deleted the file and even the /etc/lirc/lircd/conf file and restarted the service and still the remote is working the same. Even when I stopped the lirc service the remote worked. What am I missing?
