i did something wrong partitioning

I was messin around with a partition tool, i made a partition on my drive and put it so it would be used later by linux, i reboot my computer and now it asks me which partition to use and my first one which is windows, which i tried to boot into and it said "must get out of safe mode" and then i tried swqitching modes and it doesnt let me and all 3 of the partitions it says they are "PRIMARY"

i dunno what is going on, can someone help me?

Please explain further. What partitioning tool are you using. What distro are you trying to install. When you rebooted the computer were you running the linux installer?

3 partitions? How many did you create? How many windows drives do you have?

It is best to free up some space i.e. unpartitioned and let the installer autopartition for you.

see i hadnt began instaling linux yet, so it has nothing to do with the distro or anything

i was using 7tool partion manager which you can get at www.download.com

i was in the windows operating system and i made a partition and a linux swap but i hadnt even put linux in the computer yet, i rebooted and now it gives me an option of to boot from either a drive, my nfts (something like that) windows partition, or my cd rom i tried them all and it doesnt let me

i try to boot into windows and it says "you are in safe mode" or something but doesnt load up and when i try switching to normal mode it said i cant i dunno whats wrong

ill get the exact error msgs in a second, ill post them here...

ok guys i found out what program it is that is causing me to have this problem and here are the exact errors because its not letting me laod windows...

this is what the screen looks like:

Name: Drive A | Windows | CDROM | DOS
Dev: FDD1 | HDD1 | CDFS | HDD1
Partition: None | Primary 1 | None | Primary 2
FileSys: Fat12 |NTFS/HPFS | CDFS | FAT16
Size: 1440KB | 28GB | 700MB | 8032KB
Mode: -------- | ----- | ------ | -------

thats what it shows me and it lets me pic from where to boot from
when i try windows it says cant boot your in safe mode. when i try to change modes it says only second hard disk and above can change modes.
when i try booting dos it says MISSING OS and cd rom says modify bios so it first boots your primary h/d then boots the cdrom...

the program that is doing all this is www.osloader.com which i had downloaded to test out but i didnt know it was gonna do all this...i dont know what to do

someone please help me!

Dude this does not make scene. Is it your BIOS asking were you want to boot from, or are you trying to load a new OS? Can you get into this partitioning application from DOS? If so boot to a DOS floppy and see if you get in and can undo what you have done. If it can partition on the fly then it should be able to go back. This mean that it does not change any of the partition parameters that will unset the OS. Most partition tools do though, in with case you are looking at reloading your OS anyway. If that is the case any OS install package can do the repartitioning when you install and you are hoping you have good back-ups of our data.

im trying to load the os i originally had. which is winxp its that OSL2000 boot manager program that is asking what partition to run but when i try to boot one it doesnt work

i dont wanna lose my data, there has to be some way to get out of there

michaelk 12-18-2003 05:38 PM

Not familar with the program. Is there an uninstall for OSL2000?

I don't really know if there is a parition part of Win XP's repair application. I would this that would be the last this to try. Boot from the XP CD and see if you can do a repair of the partition table.

EnigmaOne 12-18-2003 08:06 PM

Go back into your partitioning utility and make sure that you didn't end up creating another primary partition--though, from the drive enumeration it doesn't look like it. Make sure that your win partition is marked as the active partition (bootable).

If all is ok, use an EBD (StartUp disk) and run fdisk /mbr
Try re-booting and see what happens.

Hope you had your data backed-up.
