I deleted the XF86Config file and and with the rename command renamed XF86Config.backup into XF86Config... I then following someone's direction from another forum typed init 5 at the promp while i was in the directory ??? I am still unable to configure the resolution back to the way it was???

Edit XF86Config and change the Modes in the screen section.

XF86Config is a text file so you edit it in a text editor, midnight commander has an editor that's easy for newbies to get the hang of, do "mcedit /etc/X11/XF86Config".

Any text editor will do. I use vi or vim.

You may want to read the xfree86 video mode how to and enter your monitors specs in xfree86 video mode calculator.

For a good Xfree86 video mode calculator go to either
http://www.zaph.com/Modeline/
http://www.control.auc.dk/~tborup/calc.html

Almost all of the configuration files are text.

For another mode line xfree86 generator
http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl <-- I like this better than the others that I posted
