I cant install my modem driver. Help required.

Hello.

I am going to be very specific in this one so i can get the best help possible.

here is what i having problems with...

Well, i have Mandriva linux 10.1 and it puts my PCTel HSP56 MicroModem under the Unknown hardware catagory in "Hardrake-The hard ware manager" the name might not be right.

Anyway, i downloaded a driver from this site:

---Link removed

which was

pctel-0.9.6.tar.gz

When i tried to follow the instructions i got to the point where i have to write this:

./configure --with-kernel-includes=/usr/include --with-hal=pct789

it starts processing and then shows me a file missing error. This file is called "modversions.h"...
I checked in /usr/include/linux for that file and i found it and wondering why the system cannot find the file although its in the right place.

Note: I think my system was installed without kernel source because it doesnt contain it so my /usr/src only has an empty RPM directory and its empty :S

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I think you'll have to build your own kernel for this (don't worry, it's not hard). Download the latest source from kernel.org (2.6 series or 2.4 series) - plenty of websites have info on compiling.

Hi Maverick5x,

This won't be hard at all. I've tested the PCTel driver under Mandriva 2006 just last week and it worked fine. Here's the file you need:

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pcte...9-rht-5.tar.gz

Do the following steps:

tax xvzf pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-5.tar.gz
cd pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-5
su
(type your root password)
./setup

In about two minutes you should see "modem activated" and your device will be ready for use.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Jeff Trull
PS: the pctel-0.9.6 version was quite old. Where did you find that link?
