I can't record streaming/other audio

I have an ASUS A8V-VM SE Mainboard w/ onboard sound. (Realtek ALC660). VIA VT 8237A Southbridge. I am unable to record streaming audio, or any audio for that matter. Have tried so many fixes I have lost track! Downloaded Linux drivers from ASUS' site, no change. Muted/unmuted all settings in ALSA. At one point I can get a very scratchy 1 channel recording in audacity, but not usable.

I have tried various sound recorders, I don't believe they are the issue; I am leaning towards a Southbridge conflict; I know that some sound cards, the ECHO line for example, will not work with this setup. Any ideas at all what I could do to remedy this situation? Linux noob here, so I need answers in "noob speak"!

Also, when I do a test in sound preferences, under "Sound Capture", I get this error;

Thank you

Well, once you hear something it is already cached, so you shouldn't need to record it - it's already on your computer. I know there are tons of programs to rip streams for windows - so there should be something for linux. I have never done that, so I can't tell you much about it. But what you should be looking for is a stream ripper, and not a way to record what you hear.

However - if your soundcard supports full-duplex you could try to connect the output with the line-in and record from there. A fairly ugly solution, but it's not like it can get much worse than a 64kb stream :P

I would still suggest you google for something like "rip stream linux"... There has to be something.
