I can't figure out how to get my soundcard to work

Linux is very difficult to use since I am a newbie and have no clue what I am doing. I can't even follow the instructions because they are vague and expect the reader to understand them. Here is my problem.

I just installed Red Hat 9.0 on my ext partition of my harddrive. I am windows dependent and am finding it very difficult that everytime I need to do something with Linux, I need to go to the prompt and type some language that I have no clue how to use in and get an error message. I am very GUI depentant, but am willing to learn. Maybe I have a bad version on Linux or maybe its jsut me. Anyway, here is the problem in a nut shell. I have a CMI8738 sound card. The Red Hat detects it but there is no sound. I have got as as downloading the ALSA files (not sure I downloaded the right ones either) and just have no clue on what to do. I have left posts but nothing has helped. The card works when I boot into WinXP. Can someone please take my hand and walk me through it.

I don't know ANY code for linux shell (terminal, Bash Shell) or what I can describe as a c prompt. please help!!

Skip alsa, no need to mess about with that, the oss driver you have should be fine.

Open up that terminal, which is running bash, which looks like the C prompt, and type the following:

su
(enter root password)
/sbin/modprobe cmpci

If that appears to do nothing, it loaded. Find a mixer in the GUI, under Multimedia, there are a number of them, things might be muted by default.

Cheers,

Finegan
