I'm trying to install SUSE Linux, but this error is driving me crazy!

I downloaded the ISO images to five CDs and booted from the first one. I choose just the regular installation, and YaST comes up and everything. However, after the optional media check, when it probes for devices, it says it cannot find any hard disks. This is being done a new computer and I have no idea how to reconcile this problem. Can anybody help? My IM is Hrothgar15 if you would rather talk that way.

Are you trying to install on a SATA hard drive because some Linux distros (and other OS including windows) have problems installing on SATA. There are workarounds, but I don't really know any since I am sticking to IDE drives for now.

You may also want to try that optional disk check. Maybe the disk a bum burn.

i had the problem of no drives being detected, and it was only IDE devices it wouldnt detect, but i think it was a BIOS or mobo error for me, have you tried checking the drive on another computer? or can you try a different drive altogether? just to determine if it is a HDD problem, or a mobo problem.

More important, I think, is to check the hardware in your new computer against the Linux Hardware Compatiblity List, to see if your hardware is supported completely, somewhat, or not at all. You may have to jump through a few hoops to make it work.
