If you go to the Seagate website and check that model number you will see that it is not listed as one with a firmware problem.
So your report is purely anecdotal.
I have two of the same drive running in a RAID1 array in a busy server without problems.

I checked with the Model No (ST3500320AS) and then the serial number and was informed that the drive is affected. I have changed the firmware to SD1A (from SD15) and there are a few odd messages from that drive. The other seagate sata drive does not show similar messages.
Changing the SATA port does not help.
The drive works fine, though...

I've checked my BIOS and I have two SATA ports SATA0 and SATA1. The SATA mode offered is IDE. No raid. This is fine because I don't need raid support at this moment.
The modes offer for SATA IDE are Combined, Enchanced and Sata only.
I will go with Enchanced mode ( allows both SATA and PATA ) drives.
Is this setup fine with linux or do I need to have raid, AHCI mode support for the SATA drive to work?
If anyone says this is fine, then I will go ahead and buy a SATA drive.
I chosen Enchance mode because of the brief description in the BIOS. It says it allows us to use both SATA and PATA devices. Does Enchanced mode means using an IDE adaptor/converter to a SATA port. If this is what it means, this is not what I want. I will be using a real SATA drive.
This is how my system is currently setup. My hard drive is the Primary Master and my DVD drive is the primary slave on IDE0. I want to keep these drives where they are.
I want to add a new drive, a SATA drive to port SATA0. And I want this to be the primary master and be the first in the boot order.
Which SATA IDE mode should I use: Combined, Enchanced, Auto or Sata only for the setup I wish to use?

For SATA there is no notion of master or slave. As for the mode, I would use AHCI, it's most likely to work without problems, but you can also use PATA if the drivers are available.
